The Ice Truck Killer strikes again, leaving a body parts before Christmas at Santa's Cottage.

Summary[]

Angel had been stabbed in a parking garage because Angel made the connection between an amputee and The Ice Truck Killer. When Dexter arrives at the bloody crime scene, he experiences memories of when his mother was murdered. Dexter tells Vince Masuka that Angel had put up a fight

Monique has another encounter with the same trick who had painted her fingernails in different colors. While he is drawing lines on her naked body in his bed, she notes that he is more gentle this time. To her surprise, he says that he had previously allowed her to live because of her "imperfection" [prosthetic hand]. Then he says that he is grateful for her because she is his escape plan because a freshly chopped up body will distract the police. Then he subdues Monique with a chokehold, carries her over his shoulder into his large refrigerated room and drains her blood.

Police officers, detectives, and Angel's family gather at the hospital to await news of Angel's condition. Deb tries to call Rudy but he doesn't answer. Eventually, Maria LaGuerta announces that Angel was saved in surgery despite internal injuries and severe loss of blood, Dexter watches everyone hug each other, including Doakes and Debra. When Dexter gets up and walks out, Doakes follows him to the elevator. He asks Dexter what the fuck is wrong with him. Dexter says he has to be some place. Doakes, disgusted, says that they all have someplace to be. He reminds Dexter that he just found our his friend is going to live. Doakes pushes him against the wall, and asks, “Does that make you feel anything? Anything at all?” Dexter glares at Doakes and orders him to take his fucking hand off him. ” Doakes removes his hand and remarks, “Just what I always thought.” They exchange angry looks, and Dexter leaves.

As Rudy is wrapping up Monique's dismembered body parts in holiday paper, he steals her ring, Debra unexpectedly arrives at his door (numbered 23) and rings his buzzer. Brian views her on his security camera and, though annoyed, welcomes her inside with Debra mentioning how freezing cold he feels. She says it's about time that she saw his place. They sit together in discussion, as he kisses her and tries to persuade her to leave town for the weekend so they can talk. However, Debra says she can’t go away at this time. When she tells Rudy that she needs to sleep, he gives her Valium in addition to wine. After Debra falls asleep, Brian [offscreen] takes Monique’s wrapped body parts to Santa's Cottage where he leaves them, along with a video of her being killed.

Dexter visits Camilla Figg at work and asks for the case file when Harry found him as a child. Camilla says she can't help him because they are boxed up at City Hall. She refuses to answer questions about the crime or Harry. Suddenly, Dexter gets a phone call to report to a crime scene.

The homicide detectives are working at the latest crime scene of the Ice Truck Killer — body parts of the hooker with the amputated hand, who had been laid out under a Christmas tree with presents. Two quarreling “elves” are questioned by Sgt. James Doakes and Det. Debra Morgan after one of them finds a human head and calls it in. They have little information to offer. Debra takes Dexter over to the Christmas tree where she notices that a nearby clock is set to 1:03. Those particular numbers were a mysterious clue at the Marina View Hotel crime scene. Vince Masuka remarks that one of the hands is missing. Dexter finds a videotape under the torso of the terrified victim reading a message. Debra realizes that she is hanging upside down due to the direction of her tears.

Captain Thomas Matthews becomes annoyed when he is questioned by reporters about the Neil Perry case.

Rita breaks the news to the kids that their father is back in jail. Cody blames Rita.

Meanwhile, Debra is getting a lot closer to Rudy. His request for them to "get out of town" and talk has her puzzled. She asks Dexter to talk to Rudy, and he learns from Rudy that he is thinking of proposing to her.

Nina, Angel's wife, and Maria visit Angel in the hospital. He says that he didn't get a look at who stabbed him.

In his lab, Dexter finds blood spatter on Angel's shirt that belongs to his attacker.

Footage on the tape left at the scene reveals that the killing was done in a residential building with an impressive custom-built cold storage room.

Dexter leaks the fact that Rudy might propose to Debra, who is quite excited by the news.

Dexter is still consumed by the desire to learn about his past. While researching newspaper articles from when he was a boy, he comes across the date October 3, or 103, the number laced throughout the crime scenes. He then uncovers the truth: his mother was a police informant who was massacred.

Dexter visits Camilla at her home and confronts her with what he's learned about the shipping yard massacre. Camilla claims to have burned his file the day Dexter's adoption went through--to protect Dexter. Camilla adds that what Harry saw in that cargo container changed him.

Dexter gets a call from a frantic Rita, saying that Cody has run away from home. He quickly realizes that Cody has gone to the park where he used to have court-ordered visits with his father. That is where they indeed find Cody on the swing-set. Dexter implores Rita to expose the children to their biological father, to let them know the kind of person he really is. He says that she in not protecting the kids, she is protecting Paul.

Doakes warns Maria that Matthews will be gunning for her.

Angel's wife discovers that an officer has brought Angel forbidden food. Angel wants to repair their relationship, but Nina states that their marriage is over.

Lt. LaGuerta, meanwhile, receives word that she is being replaced by Esmee Pascal. It is a direct consequence of making her boss look like a fool when she announced that the Ice Truck Killer was still at large, after the police assured the public that the killer had been caught.

Rita decides to follow Dexter's advice and take her kids to visit Paul in jail. This time she wants them to see him for who he is, not as "Disney Dad."

Dexter visits Angel, and sees teeth marks on the back of Angel’s head where he struck his assailant. Angel mentions that he must have hit his attacker on the lip. This strikes a chord in Dexter; Rudy has a split lip, and lied about it.

Later, alarm bells go off in Dexter's head, and he tries to stop his sister from seeing Rudy that evening. However, Rudy lures Debra away with the promise of ‘only’ dinner on a yacht.

Dexter tries to break into Rudy's apartment but the lock is industrial grade which is above his ability. He then notices a security camera above the door. Dexter next picks up a blood sample from Rudy's trash. Analysis later reveals it to be a match for the blood found on Angel's shirt.

Rudy proposes to Debra with Monique's ring on the yacht, gives her drugged champagne, and ties her up with duct tape. Before Deb passes out, she notices a lozenge wrapper.

Masuka informs Dexter that the victim at Santa's Cottage was an amputee.

Debra's disappearance leaves Dexter in a state of panic, and Rudy with a grin on his face.

  • "I've never had much use for the concept of Hell, but if Hell exists, I'm in it. The same images running through my head, over and over. I was there. I saw my mother's death. A buried memory, forgotten all these years. They climbed inside me that day. And it's been with me ever since. My dark passenger." -Dexter voiceover
  • "Deck the halls with parts of bodies, fa la la la la, la la la la!." -Ice Truck Killer
