Doctor Emmett Meridian is a character in DEXTER, introduced in Season One. Dr. Meridian is a psychiatrist with a hidden reputation for making women commit suicide and as such, is one of the more elaborate serial killers in the series. Dexter Morgan actually uses his advice to help with a situation with Rita Bennett, though shows no remorse in targeting him.
Dr. Meridian recorded video files of each of his patients, Dexter managed to discover a list of the names recorded on his computer (he deleted the name Sean Ellis, which was his alias, in order ensure that no evidence was left behind):
- Cathleen Alexander
- Ken Andrede
- Meghan Dowd
- Sean Ellis
- Vanessa Gayle
- Jeff Irvin
- Carolyn Jillian
- Jeannie Lusignan
- Melinda Mattox
- Art Rusis
Meridian is a psychiatrist who manipulated financially powerful women into shooting themselves. He first came to Dexter's attention when his third victim, Vanessa Gayle, was found dead in her bathtub after shooting herself. When looking for a connection of any kind between Gayle and two other powerful women who unexpectedly killed themselves, Dexter found that they all had regular therapy sessions for stress and/or depression with Meridian.
Scheduling an appointment with him under the name Sean Ellis, Dexter investigated whether the suicides were deliberate or simply the result of sloppy work, but ended up taking the opportunity to explore his own issues regarding his inability to open himself up to others. During the second meeting, he noticed a small camera hidden inside a plant in Meridian's office, which secretly recorded the sessions on a nearby laptop. After breaking into the office at night, Dexter erased his own session files and looked at the sessions with the three suicide victims. Dexter discovered that Meridian would suddenly cut off their medication supply, causing them to go into severe withdrawal, while filling their heads with noble thoughts of suicide, even going as far as recommending the use of firearms to show how "truly brave" they were.
Even though he had enough proof, Dexter postponed killing Meridian in order to have another session with him to discuss his inability to be intimate with Rita. After a relaxation exercise during which Dexter's subconscious memories of his mother's death came up, Dexter left and was able to spend the night with Rita. To his surprise, Rita enjoyed the intimacy they shared, as he showed real emotion during it. The next session, a happy and confident Dexter admitted his serial killer history before confronting Meridian about his indirect murders, subsequently choking him unconscious and preparing his regular "kill room." When Meridian woke up, Dexter presented a theory that he targeted powerful women because he enjoyed removing their power and thanked him for his help in working out his intimacy issues before killing him.
Meridian only has three known victims, all of whom were psychologically manipulated into killing themselves:
