Dexter's Kill List

Dexter's Kill List

"“There's six quarts of blood in the human body. This isn't going to be pretty.” ~Dexter to Miguel"

Direct Kills

Below is a list of the 144 known people that Dexter directly killed, along with their basic causes of death. Note: An X means the victim did not fit the Code of Harry. The episode is linked to each one where it happened or was mentioned.

Bay Harbor Butcher 18

The Bay Harbor Butcher 18 was the name given to the eighteen (actually 23) dismembered bodies that were found by two scuba divers off the coast of Miami. After recovery, they were laid out in a field morgue to examine and identify. Investigators never discovered they had been killed by Dexter Morgan who had dumped them from his fishing boat. Due to the location where the bodies were found and how they were cut up, the media dubbed the unknown killer "The Bay Harbor Butcher." After DNA analysis, all of the victims were found to be murderers that had slipped through the law.

Kills Outside The Code

Dexter killed a number of people who either explicitly or possibly had never committed a murder before, and therefore didn't fit the code.

  • Esteban and Teo Famosa - Drug dealers who were likely going to kill James Doakes, though no murders were ever confirmed for either. ("Left Turn Ahead")
  • Oscar Prado - Dexter overpowered and stabbed Oscar with a bayonet in an act of self defense in the home of a drug dealer. Dexter, though, had gained control of the bayonet and was trained in martial arts. ("Our Father")
  • Nathan Marten - Nathan was a pedophile who was strangled by Dexter for taking photos of Astor. ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight")
  • Camilla Figg - At her request, Dexter performed a mercy kill by feeding her poisoned key lime pie. ("Easy as Pie")
  • Jonathan Farrow - Dexter believed that Farrow was killing models, but his assistant was the true murderer. When Dexter learned that he had made a mistake, he broke Farrow's blood slide and discarded it. ("Slack Tide")
  • Rankin - Dexter impulsively beat him to death with an anchor because Rankin enraged him with verbal insults about his recently deceased wife. ("My Bad")
  • Norm - Dexter impaled Norm with a pitchfork after Norm demanded money from Dexter at gunpoint. ("Nebraska")
  • Alberto - When Alberto pulled a gun and began to threaten and rob Cuban migrants, Dexter impaled him with a boat hook. ("This is the Way the World Ends")
  • Clint McKay - He was the second ritualistically killed victim to not fit the code, after Farrow, and the first Dexter killed while knowing he had never committed a murder. Though Clint was ritualistically killed, there were slight differences: Dexter didn’t strip him naked, he killed him directly on his boat and his corpse was thrown into the Gulf Stream without being dismembered. ("The Dark... Whatever")
  • Andrew Briggs - Dexter stabbed Briggs during a struggle that Dexter caused in the Pink Motel (Fort Lauderdale). ("A Beautiful Day")
  • Elric Kane - Dexter overpowered Elric after Elric tried to kill him. He then forced him to tell him that his son Harrison was with Kurt Caldwell before stabbing him to death. ("Unfair Game")
  • Sergeant Logan - Dexter snapped Logan's neck in order to get his keys so he could free himself from his jail cell, after Logan refused to hand them over and attempted to shoot him. ("Sins of the Father")

Additionally, Stan Liddy is not known to have committed any murders, but the first rule is "Don't get caught." Since Liddy was trying to get Dexter to confess to his crimes, his murder fits the code, albeit under a different justification than usual.

Personal Kills

In each season, Dexter killed someone important or personal to him, often with a method that deviated from his normal modus operandi.

  • Brian Moser was his brother, whom he killed by slashing his throat and hanging him upside down, causing Moser to die from exsanguination. This was the method that Moser used to kill his prostitute victims. ("Born Free")
  • Lila West was his ex-lover whom he killed by administering a spinal epidural (to ensure a painless death), and stabbing her in the chest. ("The British Invasion")
  • Miguel Prado was briefly his 'best' friend with whom he bonded over killing. After Miguel turned on him, Dexter killed him by strangulation with a wire to emulate the modus operandi of The Skinner. ("I Had a Dream")
  • Arthur Mitchell was a fellow serial killer whom Dexter initially admired. Dexter killed him with a hammer, which had been part of his own sequence of murders, while playing his favorite song. After killing Arthur, Dexter discovers that he had killed Rita Morgan. ("The Getaway")
  • Jordan Chase was the founder and leader of the Barrel Girl Gang, a group who would abduct women and later murder them. He was killed by Lumen with Dexter’s assistance, using his modus operandi. However, the killing deviates slightly from Dexter’s method, as Chase is completely clothed and belted to the table. ("The Big One")
  • Travis Marshall was a mentally ill serial killer who was helping Dexter find Professor James Gellar. Unknown to Dexter, Travis had actually stabbed Gellar to death three years prior. ("This is the Way the World Ends")
  • Maria LaGuerta was about to be killed by gunshot in order to frame her in a cross-killing with Hector Estrada. However, Dexter was interrupted by Debra, who shot Maria herself. ("Surprise, Motherfucker!")
  • Oliver Saxon was the son of Evelyn Vogel. Dexter killed him in full view of a camera with a pen to the carotid artery. Dexter managed to make it look like self defense and avoided incarceration. This is the only kill to be witnessed by Angel Batista and Joey Quinn. ("Remember the Monsters?")

Lawfully Killed

Proxy/Assisted Kills

Accomplice/Accessory to Murder

While Dexter never participated in these kills directly, he actively helped as an accomplice (usually covering them up by disposing of the body), or was an accessory essential to the crime.

Alleged Victims

Dexter was a suspect in deaths that he did not commit.

  • Rita Morgan - Detective Joey Quinn suspected Dexter, due to his odd behavior and because the modus operandi slightly differed from The Trinity Killer's. However, the FBI confirmed that Dexter was not responsible. ("Hello, Bandit")
  • Dexter Morgan - Dexter was believed to have possibly committed suicide by sending his boat into Hurricane Laura. In reality, he used the storm to fake his death and escaped using a lifeboat. He would later change his identity and move to an unknown location. ("Remember the Monsters?")

Indirect Deaths

Below is a list of characters whose deaths Dexter either indirectly caused or could have prevented.

Witnesses To His Kills

Although "Don't get caught" is the first and most important rule of the Code of Harry, several people witnessed Dexter in the act of killing.

Deaths He Witnessed

On-Screen Kills

Attempted Victims

  • Joshua - A boy who bullied Dexter when he was a teenager. Dexter approached him with a knife in hand, but Harry intervened before Dexter could kill him. Following this, Harry warned Dexter there were consequences for everything he did. ("Shrink Wrap")
  • Jenna Lincoln - Dexter arrived at her house to kill her, only to discover a note which led him to an address, where he witnessed Peter Thornton copying his modus operandi to kill her. ("Dark Echo")
  • Tony Rodriguez - Dexter arrived at his house, only to find that it was now inhabited by a man named "Julian Belows." Dexter made no further attempts to find him, concluding "His kind rarely leaves forwarding addresses." ("All in the Family")
  • Sam Duke - Shortly after picking him to be his next target, Doakes walked into the station with him, having arrested him. ("All in the Family")
  • Jeremy Downs - Dexter attempted to kill him, but decided not to after Jeremy said he killed the man because he was raped by him. ("Popping Cherry") Dexter later discovered that Jeremy committed another murder and decided to go after him again. This time, however, the police arrived and arrested Jeremy before Dexter could kill him. Later, while in custody, Jeremy killed himself in a fashion similar to how he killed his victims. ("Circle of Friends")
  • Jimmy Sensio - Dexter suffered from performance anxiety and let him go, giving the excuse that he was blind. Jimmy then fled town. Dexter had taken a blood slide but he cleaned it since he didn't complete the kill. (It's Alive!)
  • Robert Brunner - Dexter almost killed him under the belief that he was one of the men responsible for Lumen's rape, but he discovered Brunner was wearing an ankle bracelet, meaning it was impossible for him to be one of the abusers. ("First Blood")
  • Joey Quinn - Dexter intended to kill him because he believed he was surveilling him. However, when he was about to abduct Quinn, Dexter was instead captured by Stan Liddy, who was actually the one watching him all along. ("Hop a Freighter")
  • Brother Sam - Dexter intended to kill him in 2002 but he was arrested during drug bust before he could make an attempt. Not long after his release, Dexter stalked him to a house, where Sam apparently shoots and kills Nick. Dexter then followed Sam to his auto shop with the intentions of subduing him with M99. However, Sam is alerted of Dexter's presence by his guard dog, Eli. When Dexter followed Sam into the garage, he discovered Nick was still alive, and ultimately decides not to kill Sam. ("Once Upon a Time").
  • Leo Hernandez - Dexter tracked him to his house, and waited for him to come out so he could kill him. However, Mike Anderson and several other cops showed up, and a shootout ensued that ended in Leo's death. ("Just Let Go")
  • Jonah Mitchell - Confronted him in a hardware store and attempted to kill him. However, Jonah revealed that Rebecca Mitchell killed herself because of their mother's abuse, and he had killed his mother because of this. Dexter decided to spare him, despite Jonah begging to be killed. ("Nebraska")
  • Louis Greene - After Dexter injected him, he started seeing black and met with Deb to talk about his feelings. Unknown to her, Louis was passed out in the trunk. After Deb left, Dexter left Louis on a bench. ("Sunshine and Frosty Swirl")
  • Hannah McKay - Dexter had her tied down on the kill table, but when she told him to do what he had to do, he cut her free. They ended up having sex on the very table where he almost killed her, and from then on entered into a romantic relationship. ("Do the Wrong Thing")
  • Isaak Sirko - Dexter went to Viktor's apartment where Isaak was staying to kill him, but instead found an Unnamed Hitman, who he killed in self defense. ("Argentina") Later, when Isaak came to Dexter's apartment for help, Dexter pinned him to the wall with a knife to his throat, but didn't kill him because Jurg Yeliashkevych was holding Hannah hostage. ("Helter Skelter")
  • Benjamin Caffrey - Caffrey was given to Dexter as a target by Isaak Sirko, along with Oleg Mickic. Dexter would kill Mickic, and then lead Caffrey onto a boat, where Isaak killed him.
  • Joe Jensen - Dexter attempted to kill him but didn't, partly because he had promised Debra not to take a case from the police. He then cut Joe free, knocked him out, and left him for Miami Metro Homicide. Dexter would later satisfy his urge to kill by murdering Clint McKay. ("The Dark...Whatever")
  • Maria LaGuerta - Dexter planned to set up her death to make it look like she and Estrada had shot each other. However, Debra arrived and LaGuerta tried to convince her to shoot Dexter, with Dexter telling her "Do what you gotta do". Impulsively, Debra shot LaGuerta in the chest, killing her. ("Surprise, Motherfucker!")
  • Lyle Sussman - Dexter believed him to be the Brain Surgeon, and went to his cabin with the intent of finding proof. There he found several tools, seemingly proving Sussman's guilt. Immediately after finding the tools, Dexter heard a creak in the back of the building. He went to investigate and found Sussman hanging from a hook. He later discovered that Sussman had been coerced to murder Leonard Welks by the Brain Surgeon, and was killed immediately afterwards. ("Every Silver Lining...)
  • Miles Castner - Hannah asked Dexter to kill Miles, but then changed her mind. When Dexter learned that Miles was abusing Hannah, he boarded his yacht, armed with a knife. However, Hannah had just killed Miles herself. ("Dress Code")
  • Zach Hamilton - Dexter initially planned to kill Zach because he had killed Norma Rivera and attempted to kill his father. At the last moment, Dexter realized how similar he and Zach were, so he cut him loose and decided to train him. ("A Little Reflection")
  • Himself - Dexter attempted to kill himself by driving Slice of Life right into Hurricane Laura, however he survived using a lifeboat. ("Remember the Monsters?", verbally confirmed as a suicide attempt in "Too Many Tuna Sandwiches").
  • Miles O'Flynn - Dexter attacked Miles intending to abduct and kill him after Harrison OD'd on drugs he sold. Luckily for Miles, Sergeant Logan arrived to take him into custody, forcing Dexter to target his supplier Jasper Hodge. ("Runaway")
  • Angela Bishop - As Angela approached Dexter to handcuff him, he watched her reflection in the toaster and contemplated grabbing one of the knives next to it. Just as he went to grab the knife, Logan entered from the other room, gun drawn, so Dexter aborted the attempt. ("Sins of the Father")

Later Successes

It took more than one attempt for Dexter to kill these targets.

  • Gene Marshall - (2 attempts) Dexter punctured Marshall's throat and was sure that he is dead, however Marshall jumped at him from the trunk causing him to additionally beat him with a flashlight and crush his head with a car, just to be sure.
  • Little Chino - (3 attempts) Dexter accidentally woke him up while cutting his cheek, and Chino escaped. Dexter tried to kill him again with a tranquilizer gun, but Chino knew he was coming for him and Dexter was chased by his gang members. Soon after, Dexter managed to capture and kill him.
  • Santos Jimenez - (2 attempts) Dexter brutally beat him in The Swamp and almost killed him with a knife until Lila phoned him and talked him out of it, believing she was talking him out of a heroin relapse. Jimenez later attempted to kill him as he walked out of Starlight Lanes, but fled when Lila yelled for help. Dexter later followed Jimenez to his Cabin in the Everglades and dismembered him with a chainsaw.
  • Fred Bowman - (2 attempts) Dexter went to his house to kill him, but found him fighting with Oscar Prado. Dexter's appearance surprised both men and Freebo was able to break free and escape. Prado turned his attention to Dexter and was killed in an act of self-defense. Dexter tracked Freebo to Teegan Campbell's home, choked him until he passed out, and dragged him into the garage. He wrapped him in plastic and set him upright on a picnic table. Dexter stabbed him in the neck with the same bayonet that Oscar Prado had attacked Freebo with the day before.
  • Benito Gomez - (2 attempts) Dexter was ready to ambush him near the bar which Benny frequented but fell asleep due to recent sleep depravation. Dexter later succeed in injecting Benny with M99 in the trailer park where Benny lived.
  • Jonathan Farrow - (2 attempts) Dexter was ready for the kill but as he was trying to get Farrow out of the club, he noticed that Joey Quinn was also there and preferred not to risk it. Instead, he killed Farrow the next night.
  • Arthur Mitchell - (7 attempts) Dexter intended to inject Mitchell with M99 at his house, but decided to wait for another attempt after seeing Arthur had a family. Dexter would later travel to Tampa with Arthur with the intentions of killing him there, but after setting up a kill site found that Arthur was missing from his hotel room, and after hours of searching, he came across Arthur attempting suicide by jumping from a building. Initially grabbing his hand to save him, Dexter realized he would technically still be dying by his hand if he let go, but as he loosened his grip several people came across the scene and helped Dexter pull him up. After a confrontation during Thanksgiving, Dexter pulls Arthur off of Jonah and throws him in the kitchen, where he stands over him with a knife; he is stopped when Arthur's wife and his daughter come into the kitchen and intervene, resulting in him leaving the house in frustration. When Arthur began looking for Dexter, Dexter broke into the home of the real Kyle Butler and laid in wait, beliving Arthur would break into the house looking for him, but when Arthur entered the home he saw a Christmas card showing the real Butler, and left before Dexter could spring his trap. Dexter next injected Arthur with M99 and placed him in his van, but before he could take him anywhere he was arrested for a hit and run incident that occurred while Dexter was pursuing him. Dexter would finally succeed in killing Arthur after abducting him as he attempted to flee town.
  • Boyd Fowler - (2 attempts) Dexter injected him, but before he could take him to the kill room, Boyd shot him with tranquilizer. Later on, Dexter does manage to kill him.
  • Travis Marshall - (3 attempts) Dexter wraps a cord around his neck when he gets in his car, and tells him to drive to the arranged kill site. During the drive, Travis revealed that he was too weak to do any of the killings and claimed Professor James Gellar had to do them all. Dexter lets Travis go, hoping he will eventually lead him to Gellar, and then drops his car off at his house. After it is revealed Travis was behind all the murders, Dexter attempts to tranquilize Travis on the docks, but after suffering from dizziness brought on by Wormwood, Travis knocks him to the ground and uses Dexter's own needle on him. Dexter later manages to kill him, anyway.
  • Ray Speltzer - (2 attempts) Dexter decides it's time to take down Speltzer, first examining his RV (which had been impounded but was released following the confession being thrown out) to turn it into a suitable (and portable) kill room then finding his trophies. However, what he did not expect to find was Speltzer returning to his camper early. Before Dexter could react Speltzer tackled him, overpowering him rather quickly between throwing him about the camper (even into the ceiling) and using his pure strength to triumph over Dexter's jiu-jitsu. Dexter even catches him in a hold (by his arm) but Speltzer's pure determination allows him to break free and subsequently knock Dexter out in the process. Later, Dexter awakes in an abandoned building, built like a maze similar to what Speltzer made for his own victims. Dexter manages to escape the maze and his second attempt won because it was purely unexpected by Speltzer.
  • Hector Estrada - (2 attempts) Dexter was about to kill Estrada, but just as he was about to, Estrada asked Dexter if he was in on it with "that bitch cop". Estrada went on to reveal that Maria LaGuerta pushed for his parole, causing Dexter to realize that Maria had set him up. Dexter then took down the picture of his three year old self, and took Estrada from the room, leaving the plastic and the still running chainsaw. Dexter got away from the scene, the conscious Estrada in tow, threatening to kill him if he made a sound. However, Estrada managed to break away from Dexter, and then jumped into the water, escaping from his would-be-killer. The next episode sees Dexter catching Estrada again, and using him to lure Maria LaGuerta to the scene. After LaGuerta is knocked unconscious, Dexter shoots Estrada in his stab wound, intending to shoot LaGuerta next so it looks like they killed each other. However, Debra was the one who ended up shooting her.
  • A.J. Yates - (3 attempts) After discovering his "lair," Dexter later returned with the intention of killing Yates. However, he had already left, but Dexter found and saved one of his victims, Janet Thorton. Later, Dexter tried to lure him into a trap by telling him his father was dying, but after Yates arrived and Dexter revealed himself, telling Yates he "depended on him to play the role of the good son," Yates pulls his father's oxygen in an attempt to kill him and call nursing home personnel. AJ then jumped out of a nearby window, while Dexter had to hide behind the door from the personnel. Later Yates was trying to kill Evelyn Vogel in her apartment when Dexter deduced where he was.
  • Oliver Saxon - (4 attempts) After discovering he was The Brain Surgeon, Dexter and Evelyn Vogel lured him to a cafe, Dexter allowing Vogel to believe she would be able to speak to him again. However, Dexter drugged her, and went to the cafe alone, where he watched Saxon and waited for him to come out. When he finally did, Dexter followed him, but discovered that his tires had been slashed. Later on, Dexter and Vogel devised a plan so that Dexter could capture him and kill him. Dexter believed Vogel would meet him in a public place, but instead she chose to meet him in private, at her home. In the end, this was her undoing, and Saxon killed her as Dexter watched, escaping afterward as Dexter held her in her dying moments. In the second to last episode, Saxon comes to Dexter's apartment with the intentions of killing him. When he tries to stab the supposedly sleeping Dexter, he grabs his hand and Debra puts a gun to the back of his head. He is then tranquilized, and taken to a kill room, his own "operating room". They talk, and during their discussion, Dexter realizes he doesn't need to kill Saxon, but he still needs to die - so he calls Deb. After she arrives, he tells her to arrest Oliver. However, after Dexter drives off, Max Clayton arrives and undoes the restraints keeping him down. Immediately after, Saxon grabs one of the nearby knives and stabs him. Just as Debra walks in, he takes Clayton's gun and shoots her but, as he is escaping, Debra shoots him in the arm.

Additionally, while parts of the same attempts, Dexter changed the intended ways of killing for Walter Kenney (knife to suffocation with a pillow), Travis Marshall (Sword of John the Revelator to his own knife), Viktor Baskov (usual plan to improvised kill with a fire extinguisher) and Jasper Hodge (knife to forced Fentanyl overdose) mid-kill.

Assault and Battery

Dexter usually restrains from physical confrontation unless absolutely necessary. Assault and battery as part of attempted kills won't be listed here.

  • Harry Morgan - Harry volunteered to be a physical target so that teenage Dexter could practice ambush and strangulation. ("Shrink Wrap")
  • Paul Bennett - Knocked out with a frying pan. ("Seeing Red")
  • James Doakes - At least three major physical altercations: a fight at the docks, headbutting in Miami Metro Police Department and a physical fight near Santos Jimenez' cabin in the Glades. ("Born Free", That Night, a Forest Grew", "Resistance Is Futile") Also knocked him out by poisoning the water bottle (possibly with M99 dissolved in it). ("There's Something About Harry")
  • Dr. Manny Pena - Dexter's actions at sabotaging field morgue caused him to vomit, which could be considered battery under American law. ("See-Through")
  • Andrew Brightman - Physically fought and restrained. ("Blinded by the Light")
  • Elliot Larson - Punched in the face. ("Hello, Dexter Morgan")
  • Barry Kurt - Dexter, believing that Astor and her friend Olivia had been kidnapped, pulled Barry out a patrol car and demanded to know where they were, threatening to kill him. Later, Dexter learned that Barry was abusing Olivia, so Dexter beat him up and ordered him to leave her mother. ("Teenage Wasteland")
  • Leo Hernandez - Disarmed and knocked out with his own baseball bat. ("Once Upon a Time...")
  • Uncooperative Suspect - While Dexter tried to get a DNA swab from a resisting suspect, Dexter grabbed him by the neck. Although it is doubtful he was going to kill the man, the gesture was very hostile, especially considering that Dexter had already imagined killing two people that very day (Masuka and a postal worker). ("Buck the System")
  • Inconsiderate Driver - While driving away from a grocery store where he had talked to his sister for the first time in months, Dexter was cut off by in traffic. Dexter proceeded to get in front of the man and both of them pulled over. He then went to the man and angrily put his hands around his neck, slamming him into his seat. However, when he saw a young boy in the backseat, Dexter went back to his car and drove off, still furious. ("A Beautiful Day")
  • Miles O'Flynn - as Dexter was unable to kill him due to Sergeant Logan approaching, he decided instead to use beating as an excuse and cover-up for attempted murder. ("Runaway")

Stalked Only

  • Phil Bosso - Initially, Dexter believed him to be the Phantom Arsonist, so he stalked him to find evidence. Instead, he found proof that Bosso couldn't be responsible for the killings because he had an alibi. ("The Dark... Whatever")
  • Ed Hamilton - After Norma Rivera's death, Miami Metro began to look for suspects in her murder. One of the suspects was Hamilton, a man that she worked for. It turned out that Norma was Ed's mistress, so he fell under the radar of both the PD and Dexter. However, before leaving Ed's residence, Dexter ran into Zach Hamilton, who told him that his father was "an asshole, but no killer." This led Dexter to discover that it was Zach who killed Norma, not Ed. ("This Little Piggy")

Endangered and Threatened

  • Carlos Guerrero - After setting up the Kill Room for Matt Chambers, Dexter was invited by Debra to celebrate her promotion to the Homicide department. At the restaurant, Dexter noticed Guerrero and followed him into the bathroom and briefly considered using the room to kill him and get Chambers at a later date. He decided against it, speculating that Guerrero's lifestyle would eventually lead to his demise. ("Crocodile").
  • Ricky - Ricky came by Rita's house to collect a drug debt that her husband had accumulated, and while she collected the keys to the car to settle the debt, he noticed and joked about the gardening shovel Dexter held as a potential murder weapon. Dexter clearly struggled to remain calm during the confrontation. ("Popping Cherry")
  • Rita's Neighbor - Dexter briefly thought that he could easily "help" Rita with the neighbor's noisy dog. It's possible that he was not thinking of only killing the dog. ("Popping Cherry")
  • Lucas - Despite stalking Downs in his attempt to kill Lucas, Dexter had no plan to rescue him which left Lucas in great danger. Ultimately, Dexter was more benevolent than usual and saved him. ("Popping Cherry")
  • Suspects - Jose Molina, Pedro Famosa, Manuel Valdes, and Ramon Fernandez were suspects in the human smuggler case until Dexter picked up Jorge Castillo. ("Love American Style")
  • Neil Perry - Dexter planned to kill The Ice Truck Killer, so Perry put himself in danger when he falsely confessed to the murders. However, there wasn't much of a window between when the department found Perry's planted evidence and his arrest, so it's unlikely Dexter would've had the chance to kill him. ("Circle of Friends")
  • Allison Sera - Her life was dependent on whether Dexter killed Roger Hicks. Considering his problems with the Bay Harbor Butcher Case, Sera was lucky that Dexter did kill Hicks. ("An Inconvenient Lie")
  • John Henry - He was an attempted victim by Ken Olson, who was inspired by Dexter's deeds. ("Dex, Lies and Videotape")
  • James Doakes - Dexter remarked to him that he could "unleash the beast at any time." However, Doakes told him that he would "hate himself for the rest of his life" if he did so. ("There's Something About Harry")
  • Astor Bennett and Cody Bennett - Lila West kidnapped them to lure Dexter to her loft where she attempted to burn him and the children alive. ("The British Invasion")
  • Yoga Instructor - During a particularly miserable yoga session, Dexter briefly contemplated killing the instructor. ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight")
  • Profiles in the Florida Criminal Records Database - Damon Clarkson, Anthony Cowley, Harold Cramer, Dustin Devereaux, Cole Dianno, Michael Donner, Thayer Drake, Kevin Egelano, Mario Espinoza, Corey Estherhouse, George Evans, Bingham Forrester, Vincent Fraser, Bradley Garrison, Michael Grant, Josue Guerrero (listed as Joshua Guerrero in the sidebar), Glenn Kobayashi, Shawn Petersen, Frederick Sellers, Keith Stalker, Curtis Yomtob, Alan Yonkers, Josh Zeigler, Ole Zellig. When Miguel Prado wanted to share a kill, Dexter browsed through their profiles and eventually settled on Clemson Galt due to the difficulty killing him would pose, although Dexter ended up killing him in private. Profiles on Guerrero, Kobayashi, Petersen, Sellers, Stalker and Yomtob were shown, while the other names only appeared in the sidebar list to the left. ("Sí Se Puede")
  • Albert Chung - Shortly before suggesting Ellen Wolf, Miguel talked about the Chung case, proposing that he and Dexter "take care of the problem" themselves. Dexter initially believed he was talking about Chung, but Miguel then clarified that he saw Chung as merely a "symptom," while Wolf was the "problem" he was referring to. ("Easy as Pie")
  • Andrew Brightman - When Dexter broke into the Brightman residence to warn Andy against vandalizing more properties, the two briefly fought after he threatened to kill him. During the ensuing struggle, Dexter's threats became more serious and he put his hands around Andy's neck. ("Blinded by the Light")
  • Jesse Brightman - To blackmail Andy out of vandalism, Dexter not only suggested Andy's own decapitation, but also threatened to do it to his son, likely as a bluff. ("Blinded by the Light")
  • Kyle Butler - Because his name was the same as Dexter's alias, he was in danger of being killed by Trinity, but Dexter indirectly prevented it. ("Hello, Dexter Morgan")
  • Lundy's Trinity Suspects - Fred Barnes, John Henry and Bo Centkowski. Dexter planned on killing someone and framing them as the Trinity killer to throw Miami Metro off of the real Trinity's trail, thus all of them were in danger before he settled on Stan Beaudry. ("Hello, Dexter Morgan")
  • Elliot Larson - While Dexter was packing his things to move into Debra's apartment after the death of Rita, Elliot stopped by and asked whether his help was needed. Dexter dropped the kitchen knives and, annoyed, paused with his hand holding a knife a few inches from unsuspecting Elliot. He was clearly thinking how much he hated Elliot, while trying to suppress the urge for murder. ("Hello, Bandit")
  • Barry Kurt - He told a terrified Barry after beating him, "If you ever come back, believe me, I won't go easy on you next time," implying that he would kill him. ("Teenage Wasteland")
  • Joey Quinn - Dexter's immediate thought after hearing that Quinn proposed to Debra was "uncle to my son... Over his dead body". It should be noted that at the point Dexter already was determined to kill Quinn in "Hop a Freighter" but discovered that it was Stan Liddy who surveiled him. ("Once Upon a Time...")
  • Leo Hernandez - Dexter disarmed him in an altercation that could have been lethal if not for Dexter's expertise. ("Once Upon a Time...")
  • Evelyn Vogel - Dexter threatened to kill her, but was likely bluffing, as pointed out by Vogel herself. ("A Beautiful Day")
  • Arnold Gordon - While Vogel and Dexter were trying to figure out which of Vogel's patients was The Brain Surgeon, Gordon was mentioned as a possible suspect due to being a surgeon and having at least one known victim. Whether there was any follow up on him or not is unknown. ("What's Eating Dexter Morgan?")

Fantasy Kills

Below are characters killed by Dexter in his imagination or dreams.

Suggested Kills

Animals

As many serial killers do, Dexter started his killing spree with animals. Through the years, his self-control towards animals improved. At age 20, he started killing humans - Nurse Mary was the first.

ANIMALS KILLED

  • Buddy - He was a dog who belonged to the Billups, neighbors of the Morgans. Dexter killed it because Doris Morgan (who was sick) wasn't able to sleep due to its barking. ("Dexter") It's unknown if Buddy was the same dog that chased Dexter, causing him to fall on spikes and badly injure himself. ("Father Knows Best")
  • Unknown Animals - While confronting young Dexter about Buddy, Harry mentioned that a lot of other bones were buried in Buddy's grave. ("Dexter") During his teenage years, Dexter secretly killed animals. Harry uncovered this after finding Dexter's knives with blood on them. ("Dexter")
  • Pheasants - Before a hunting trip, Harry told Dexter what type of gun to use to kill pheasants. At the last minute, Harry decided to kill a deer instead, but they likely hunted pheasants at other times. ("Popping Cherry")
  • Deer - One was shot by Harry and finished by Dexter, who stabbed the deer after Harry handed him a knife. ("Popping Cherry") They presumably went on to hunt deer at other times. In Season Four, a deer was accidentally hit by Arthur Mitchell, and then finished by Dexter with an axe ("Slack Tide").
  • Hunting - Dexter frequently hunted in his teenage years as Harry chose it as a way to channel Dexter's urges to kill. Dexter likely killed dozens of various animals legally as a hunter. Although Dexter became a skilled marksman, he avoided using guns as an adult.
  • Boar - Wild pigs that Harry and Dexter would hunt. When one of the boar hunts was postponed due to Harry's schedule, Dexter became angry. {"It's Alive!")
  • Stone Crabs - While on a date with Rita at the Crab Festival, Dexter likely a fresh-cooked crab, and Rita smashed one with a mallet. ("Dexter") In Dexter: The Game, he smashed dozens.
  • Mosquito - One is shown in every opening since "Crocodile." It's crushed by Dexter, leaving a drop of blood.
  • Raccoon - Dexter killed and set up a raccoon on the road in order to lure Boyd Fowler to him. Boyd immediately ascertained that the animal was killed elsewhere and was not road kill. ("Hello, Bandit")

ANIMAL INTERACTIONS

Prominent Victims

The following are victims that held a special meaning to Dexter, or caused a special event to unfold. Most of these victims didn't have a blood slide taken, due to lack of time or Dexter's personal choice.

  • Nurse Mary - Mary was an Angel of Death who killed by overdosing sick or elderly patients with morphine, under the excuse that she was helping them. Harry pointed her out to Dexter who took action, wrapping a room in her house in plastic, readying her for a kill. This one was a bit messy but certainly the most meaningful as it was his first human kill. Dexter stabs her multiple times until she was dead. ("Popping Cherry")
  • Juan Ryness - Juan was a pimp who beat one of his prostitutes to death. Being one of Harry Morgan's sought after targets, Dexter thought the best way to make his father happy would be to kill Juan. So he tracked him down and Harry caught him in the act of dismembering his body, which sickened him. Shortly thereafter, Harry committed suicide as he couldn't live with himself after seeing what Dexter was capable of doing to another human being, and realizing he had a part in it.
  • Alex Timmons- Alex was a former sniper for the Marines who was discharged and then killed four random, innocent people by sniping them. He may have been arrested on suspicion of doing so and then released, which would explain how he came into Dexter's sight. Dexter killed him with a single stab to the chest with an USMC combat knife, a reference to Alex's being in the marines and collected his very first blood slide. In the Dexter Early Cuts series, Alex had murdered three children, though this was not canon in the Showtime's series; in the Showtimes series, none of his victims were children, apart from a seventeen-year old girl.
  • Brian Moser - Brian is Dexter Morgan's older brother and serial killer. To get his brother's attention, he murdered prostitutes in a similar fashion to his brother (except with surgical, precise cuts). Brian was present at their mother's death and unfortunately ended up in an psychiatric hospital until he was 21-years-old, when he was released and took on the alias Rudy Cooper from a man he had killed. Brian desired to reunit with his brother after finding out that the two of them were both killers. Thus, Brian started setting up clues to help Dexter recall who he was and eventually the two met face to face (as brothers), with a bad ending that leaves Debra Morgan in a tragic state and Brian dead, made to look like a suicide. Dexter intended to kill Brian while he was unconscious, so that he wouldn't know what hit him. He woke up, however, and the two shared an emotional conversation, before Dexter slit his brother's throat with a knife and left him to bleed out just like his victims. Dexter does not take a blood slide from his brother, claiming he wasn't a trophy, but needed to be put down for the protection of his sister.
  • Santos Jimenez - Santos was one of Laura Moser's Killers, specifically the man responsible for sawing her into pieces along with several other people in a shipping container. This incident would forever warp Dexter and Brian's life, turning them into serial killers. Dexter eventually found Santos working in a bar in Naples. When the two finally meet, Dexter played into finding out more about Santos until viciously attacking him and nearly killing him, but decided not to at the last moment. This created a problem, as Santos later tried to kill him at Starlight Lanes. This failed and only prompted Dexter to follow him to an abandoned cabin, where he sawed Santos into pieces like he had done to Dexter's mother long ago. Dexter collected a blood slide from Santos, but his blood slide was "lost."
  • Lila West - Lila was a fiery extrovert who introduced herself to Dexter at a NA meeting that he attended after pretending to be heroin addict to Rita (to divert suspicion when he framed Paul Bennett). An outgoing woman with a British accent, it's later revealed that Lila was an arsonist. She caused a breakup between Rita and Dexter which led to her being in a relationship with Dexter. He listened to Lila's advice and tried to control his urges (although she thought his urge was to shoot heroin). Before long, she became obsessed with Dexter and ended up using Batista when he didn't want to see her anymore. Dexter chose to kill Lila due to his failed attempts to get her to back off, her murder of James Doakes, and her threats to the lives of Cody and Astor. Dexter tracked Lila to Paris, stabbed her in the heart, and zipped up her body in a plastic garment bag. He first insured that she didn't feel any pain with a spinal epidural, and didn't take a blood slide from her.
  • Miguel Prado - Miguel was Dexter's first "accomplice." He is also the brother of one of Dexter's victims (Oscar Prado). He was killed by Dexter after Miguel killed Ellen Wolf for threatening his career and then targeted Maria LaGuerta because she discovered he killed Ellen. Dexter killed Miguel with a metal wire, wrapped around his neck. Dexter didn't take a blood slide from him. He does, however, remove several patches of skin off Miguel's shoulder to frame George King for his murder.
  • George King - Dexter was forced to kill him when King held him captive. Of note, King was the only Dexter victim to have Dexter tied him down, on the verge of killing him. However, Dexter escaped, breaking his hand in the process. After a struggle, Dexter killed King by breaking his neck and throwing his body onto an incoming police cruiser, staging it as a suicide. Dexter did not take a blood slide because he did not have enough time to do so.
  • Arthur Mitchell - Arthur Mitchell was a successful serial killer who was active for thirty years, as well as a "family man." With a known kill count of 279 people, he was one of the most prolific serial killers that Dexter killed. Dexter took a blood slide from him, making him the 24th confirmed blood slide in the second box. He was the only main antagonist killed by Dexter to have a blood slide taken, and placed in the slide box.
  • Boyd Fowler - First member of the Barrel Girl Gang to be killed by Dexter.
  • Dan Mendell - Member of the Barrel Girl Gang. Shot by Lumen, neck then snapped by Dexter
  • Cole Harmon - Boyd, Dan, and Cole were members of the Barrel Girl Gang. Dexter took a blood slide from Boyd, but not Dan. He did take a blood slide from Cole, but gave it to Lumen. The other two members, Alex Tilden and Jordan Chase, were killed by Lumen.
  • Travis Marshall - Travis was a serial killer who had hallucinations of Professor James Gellar. Although it was initially believed that Professor Gellar was behind the killings, it's revealed that Gellar was killed by Travis three years before the events of the season. Travis accused Dexter of killing Gellar, and believed him to be The False Prophet. Travis tried to kill Dexter in The Lake of Fire tableau, but failed. Then he tried to sacrifice Dexter's son, Harrison Morgan, in the The Lamb tableau. However, Dexter stopped him, and took him to the very church Travis used as a hideout. Just as Dexter stabbed Travis, Debra Morgan entered, causing Dexter to utter, "Oh God". Dexter lied about what happened and convinced her to not call the police. Debra retrieved gasoline from a gas station, and they burned Travis's body. Dexter took a blood slide from Travis, but he lost at the scene, and Maria LaGuerta discovered it.
  • Viktor Baskov - Viktor was a prominent member of the Koshka Brotherhood and a leader of their operations in the United States. Viktor was brought to his position by the Brotherhood's leader, Isaak Sirko who was Viktor's lover. During a feud with the Colombian Rojas Cartel, the Koshka Brotherhood's rivals, Viktor was sent to Maimi in order to hold off the Colombians because his subordinate, George Novikov, failed in doing so. During his time in Miami, Viktor murdered a stripper named Kaja Soroka. While fixing a flat tire, he encountered Detective Mike Anderson, who discovered Kaja's corpse in Viktor's trunk, prompting Viktor to shoot him dead. Later, Viktor was tracked down to the airport by Dexter, who injected him with M99 in the bathroom before taking him to a makeshift kill room and bludgeoning him to death with a fire extinguisher, avenging Anderson's death.
  • Ray Speltzer - Ray was a serial killer who would trap his victims in a maze-like area, and then chase them, until catching them and beating them to death. At his last victim's maze, he attempted to kill Debra Morgan. Dexter then made an attempt on Ray's life, but he was knocked out and taken to a different maze. After a short chase, Dexter escaped from the building. Later, at the cemetery, Dexter knocked Speltzer out with a shovel, hitting him so hard that the handle broke. When Ray awoke, he was strapped down on a table before the cremation furnace. After a short conversation, Dexter killed Ray with a stab to the chest, using the broken shovel handle. Dexter did not take a blood slide from Ray; in fact, Dexter placed his second Blood Slide Box on his chest and burned it with Ray's body.
  • Hector Estrada - Hector was a notorious drug lord in Miami's past, and the crime lord who ordered the death of Laura Moser. For the majority of the series, Hector was in prison, until he was released by the advocacy of Maria LaGuerta, who used him as bait to catch Dexter Morgan, who she believed was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Once Hector was free, Dexter brought him to a shipping container like the one in which Hector and his subordinates killed Laura Moser. Before Dexter could kill Hector with a chainsaw, LaGuerta and two detectives arrived at the shipyard, forcing Dexter to free Hector and make his escape. Hector wouldn't be free for long, as Dexter managed to find him again and brought him back to the shipping container. He persuaded Estrada to call LaGuerta (who believed he was dead) and summon her to the shipyard, where Dexter planned to kill them both and make it look like they killed each other. However, Debra unexpectedly appeared on scene and ended up shooting LaGuerta.
  • Matt Caldwell - Matt was the son of Kurt Caldwell and a local nuisance in Iron Lake. In the past, Matt caused a boat wreck that resulted in five deaths. Initially believed to be an accident during which Matt was asleep, Dexter later discovers through Matt's friend Bill that he had in fact been driving the boat and intentionally crashed it into the other. Caldwell would later on shoot a white buck Dexter had been pursuing, nearly shooting him in the process. In response, Dexter struck him with the butt of the rifle, knocking him unconscious, and took him to his shed, where he would become Dexter's first victim in nearly ten years. He was also the first to have a blood slide taken since Travis Marshall, albeit one made out of two broken pieces of glass.
  • Sergeant Logan - Logan was a sergeant in the Iron Lake police department, as well as an assistant wrestling coach and friend of Dexter's. Logan took part in the arrest of Dexter due to Matt Caldwell's murder, as well as the possibility that he was the Bay Harbor Butcher. After Dexter sent Angela off to discover Kurt Caldwell's crimes, Logan was the only one in the station with Dexter. When he brought him a bottle of water per his request, Dexter slammed his head against the bars of the cell and put him in a chokehold, demanding his keys. Despite warnings to 'not be a hero', Logan drew his gun and attempted to shoot backwards to wound him, though he managed to duck in time. Dexter snapped his neck as a result, and escaped from his cell. Logan was Dexter's final innocent victim as well as his final victim overall.

Victim Count Analysis

Although the kill list total is listed as 144, it’s likely closer to 160.

  • Accuracy of Order - Unfortunately, “Dexter's Kill List” cannot be placed in a precise order since many of his victims were identified during the Bay Harbor Butcher Case.
  • Kill Discrepancy - In "My Bad" Dexter states that he has killed 67 people who "deserved to die," with Arthur Mitchell being the 67th. However, by this point, Dexter is known to have killed at least 96 people, with only five not being murderers. In The Family Business, Dexter states to Harrison his kill count is 'in the hundred's', though it is unknown if Dexter himself knows the exact number of people he has directly killed.
  • Unreadable Names - A few blurry names are presented during the Bay Harbor Butcher Case. It is stated, however, that all victims on the list were identified via the 46 blood slides.
  • No Blood Taken - Dexter began collecting blood slides when he killed Alex Timmons but he had already killed at least seven or eight people (likely more) from whom he didn’t take blood. Also, Dexter did not collect blood from a number of his other victims, such as those he knew personally or killed on the spot. He apparently did not take blood from at least 39 people. First and second season victims are listed in the Butcher Case, if Dexter was shown collecting their blood.
  • Possible Early Victims - In Alex Timmons (Early Cuts), Dexter states that he has "killed dozens of bad guys" which implies at least twenty-four additional victims before Alex. Eight of these are accounted for: Nurse Mary, Juan Ryness, an unnamed victim, a drug dealer, Robert Milson, Peter Thornton, and an unknown victim Dexter was stalking (per a defunct website). Another man's neck was sawed through with a disc power saw, possibly Peter Thornton or someone listed in the first box in the Promo: "Serial Killer by Night". This leaves sixteen additional early victims that are not on the kill list.
  • Probable Blood Slide - Two weeks before New Year's Eve of 2000, Dexter dumped the body of an unknown man with a long beard, seemingly dressed as Santa Claus. He may be one of the slides in the first box ("All in the Family (Early Cuts)." He is not on the kill list.
  • Extra Butcher Victims - Frank Lundy mentions the names of "Orozco" and "Smith" as Bay Harbor Butcher 18 victims in “Morning Comes.” The name "Fowls" and body parts are shown during Lundy's presentation in “There’s Something About Harry.”
  • Novel Discrepancy - In the TV series, Mike Donovan is listed as blood slide 40 because Dexter’s slides add up to 46 by the end of Season Two and he had only kept six additional blood slides (Jaworski, Chambers, Jorge Castillo, Meridian, Little Chino, and Hicks). However, in Darkly Dreaming Dexter, with the murder of Father Donovan, the total is 37 blood slides.
  • Promo Count - In the Season Five Promo, "Turned Upside Down," Dexter's blood slide box has 23 slides in it when he inserts the 24th, apparently for Trinity. This syncs with the count for the second box.
  • Kills Between Seasons - Dexter usually satisfies his need to kill at least once a month. Therefore, he continues to take lives during time skips.
    • Between Season Two and Season Three, the second box gains four slides which imply a four-month period.
    • Between Season Three and Season Four, the second box gains twelve slides which imply a twelve-month period.
    • After killing Walter Kenney, Dexter drops his box of slides, causing them to fall out of order, with one breaking. However, it is clear that Walter's slide is the 43rd slide of the box, which implies thirteen additional kills between Season Five and Season Six.
    • Although Dexter stopped collecting blood slides in Season Seven, it was specifically stated that six months had passed between that season and Season Eight. This implies that Dexter had killed at least five more aside from the Unidentified Victim shown in the opening credits. These five are not on the kill list.

Early Cuts Timeline

Dexter Early Cuts has a few inconsistencies with the TV series.

Trivia

  • Dexter's first victim (Nurse Mary) and his last victim before his ten year hiatus (Debra) were both female. After his ten year hiatus, his first victim (Matt Caldwell) and his final victim (Sergeant Logan) were both male.
  • Season One is the only season where all of Dexter's kills meet the Code. Starting with Season Two, Dexter claimed lives that did not fully meet the code. Despite this, Dexter only acknowledges he's never killed anyone without vetting them in Season Three, when he killed Oscar Prado: he seems to have overlooked he did not vet the Famosa brothers when he killed them to save Doakes.
  • Although not actual victims, "All in the Family" reveals that Dexter used to mutilate and dismember his sister's dolls, and is shown setting fire to a stuffed bear.
  • "It's Alive!" is the only season premiere where Dexter does not kill anybody, although there are two attempts (Jimmy Sensio and Little Chino). Similarly, "The Big One" is the only season finale where Dexter kills no one, although he does aid Lumen in killing Jordan Chase.
  • Dexter's first kill, Nurse Mary, was to save Harry Morgan. Ironically, Dexter's final kill before his ten year hiatus was Debra Morgan, Harry's daughter.
  • Only two of Dexter's victims appeared alive in more than one season - Camilla Figg and Debra Morgan. Both were mercy kills and both were female. Brian Moser and Travis Marshall appeared in seasons after their deaths as well, although Brian appeared as Dexter's darkness (in seasons two and six) and Travis appeared as a corpse in the following season.
  • Of the nine main antagonists, only two were not killed by Dexter. Jordan Chase was stabbed in the chest by Lumen Pierce, and Isaak Sirko was shot by George Novikov. Despite this, both were disposed of by Dexter. Isaak Sirko was dropped into the Gulf Stream so that he could be with his lover Viktor Baskov, who Dexter had previously killed.
  • Dexter lost Travis Marshall's blood slide at the crime scene, which was later found - broken and partially burned - by Maria LaGuerta. Travis was the last victim that Dexter took a blood slide from, as he later abandoned this practice when he killed Ray Speltzer. However, he later took a makeshift blood slide from Matt Caldwell with two broken pieces of glass, although his monologue implied that he didn't feel the need to resume the practice, with none of his following victims having blood slides taken from them.
  • Stan Liddy was about to expose Dexter. Since the first rule of the Code is "Don't Get Caught," killing him was justified by the code. ("Hop a Freighter")
  • In "The Family Business", Dexter tells Harrison that his kill count is "in the hundreds", implying while he may not remember the exact figure, he knows his kill count is in the hundreds. However, he may have been lying to Harrison, as he also claimed to have killed Arthur Mitchell in order to avenge Rita's death. Even if he was lying, Dexter has shown to remember his kills quite well, meaning he may have been telling the truth about his kill count.
